Aluminum Boats and Their Advantages

By Captain Mike Jackson · April 3, 2026

If you have ever tried aluminum boats or vessels, you are unlikely to want to return to their plastic counterparts. While we shouldn’t underestimate the merits of plastic, aluminum has a number of significant advantages over it.

The first and primary advantage of aluminum is the strength of its construction. Aluminum boats are more resilient than other boats made from similar materials. If your boat encounters a serious emergency situation, restoring an aluminum boat is much easier than restoring one made from other materials.

To increase reliability, pure aluminum is not used; instead, an alloy of aluminum with magnesium is employed. The main characteristic of this alloy is its lightness combined with maximum possible strength. This lightness allows a boat or vessel to accelerate faster.

Naturally, this is not the only advantage. Another significant benefit of aluminum is its corrosion resistance, environmental friendliness, and the ability to patch holes using an ordinary welding machine.

If you’re interested in such a design, you can order an aluminum boat here. The cost of an aluminum boat or vessel is considerably higher than plastic alternatives. However, aluminum options do not require frequent maintenance. Another important advantage of aluminum is the high liquidity of boats made from this material on the secondary market. If a boat or vessel has been operated carefully and gently, the loss in value will be minimal—no more than 10%. Moreover, if you decide to simply dispose of an old aluminum boat, you will be able to recover part of your investment.

The only disadvantage of aluminum-magnesium alloy is its susceptibility to various electrochemical processes. If you operate your boat correctly, this negative effect can be completely avoided. This is why basic operational guidelines are provided below.

Operating Guidelines
  • Always “disconnect the ground”
  • Avoid contact with other metals
  • Insulate all metal rope ends
  • Store your boat or vessel on keel blocks
  • Do not replace plugs with materials of different types

In all other respects, aluminum boats surpass any other boats and vessels made from various materials.
