Catamaran Boats: What They Are, Types, and Illustrated Guide

By David Miller · April 3, 2026

A catamaran is a two-hulled vessel that, as a rule, should be connected into a single body with a special bridge. In some sports variants of this vessel, the deck is completely absent; instead, a metal net is installed.

The word “catamaran” itself comes from one of the dialects of the Dravidian language, which is widespread in southern India. It was originally pronounced as “kattumaram,” which literally meant logs tied together.

Such a watercraft appeared in ancient times. History remembers vessels similar to catamarans that were used several thousand years ago. Catamarans were most widespread in Oceania at that time and were also used by European peoples, such as the Romans during sieges. They additionally installed ladders on them for assaults.

However, over time, such watercraft lost their popularity due to the complexity of manufacturing and constant problems with ensuring stability and durability in waves. Since catamarans did not prove themselves as ocean-going vessels, they began to be built mainly for use on inland waterways, rivers, lakes, etc.

Catamaran yachts today

Currently, catamarans can be found in practically every corner of the world, mainly as entertainment for tourists on water bodies. Most often, these are pedal catamarans, which cannot develop high speeds.

This type of water transport continues to develop actively, and catamaran yachts are becoming increasingly popular. The main materials for their construction are:

  • aluminum;
  • composite materials;
  • steel (marine).

These yachts are divided into series-produced and custom-made models. The latter are manufactured to order and can be equipped according to the customer’s preferences. This allows such vessels to be classified in the luxury category.

The vast majority of such catamarans have sail-motor equipment.

The design features of catamaran yachts allow them to develop very high speeds for watercraft. Some specimens can accelerate to 250 kilometers per hour or even more, which eventually led to the emergence of a new sporting discipline — water-motor Formula-1, or first-class speedboat racing, which have a design similar to a catamaran.

Differences between yachts and catamarans

Despite the existence of catamaran yachts, yachts and catamarans have differences. These are two different types of transport. Catamarans are often classified as yachts for one simple reason — a yacht is conventionally considered to be any vessel intended for recreation. The main difference is that a large catamaran is, in essence, a double yacht with twice as much space, and each float can be equipped with separate cabins, galley, rooms, amenities, etc.

A catamaran, like a yacht, can sail under sail or be propelled by motor, but when it comes to stability in rough waters, the difference is simply enormous.

Thanks to the larger area, rolling is practically imperceptible, so even those prone to seasickness can enjoy a comfortable rest on such catamarans.

A catamaran yacht performs much safer in shallow waters, as its keel does not go as deep into the water. This opens up many more possibilities, as you can venture into remote harbors that classic yachts cannot enter!

Other types of catamarans

Along with improvements in composite materials, new types of catamarans began to appear, mostly equipped with sail rigging. Throughout the post-Soviet space, you can quite often find inflatable or rafting catamarans, which are usually used for recreational boating to fish or simply relax.

Such catamarans are convenient because they have relatively low weight and can be folded and transported. These tourist rafting catamarans consist of two airtight cylinders covered with high-quality dense rubber. Often, each cylinder is also divided into two compartments with air valves for additional safety.

There are also children’s plastic catamarans, which are propelled by pedals.

Catamarans are traditionally used by indigenous peoples living on tropical islands to ferry from one shore to another, as well as for fishing. In this case, catamaran structures are made from bamboo, which floats well on water and can carry heavy loads.

The sail for such a catamaran is usually made from palm leaves, but other options are sometimes found. The structure uses wood, with strength provided by tying the bamboo and logs together with rope made from palm fiber.
